John Ruffolo | Chief Executive Officer

OMERS Ventures

John is the Chief Executive Officer of OMERS Ventures, the venture arm of OMERS, one of Canada’s leading pension funds. OMERS Ventures is a multi-stage investor in growth-oriented, disruptive technology companies. In addition, he is also the Executive Managing Director with OMERS Platform Investments, the innovation investing arm of OMERS. 

John serves as the following: 

  • Hootsuite | Board Member – The most widely used social media management platform 

  • Desire2Learn (D2L) | Board Member – A global leader in EdTech 

  • Point North Capital | Investment Committee Member – Invests in equity and debt situations where it is able to influence operational, financial and strategic direction 

  • Purpose Investments Inc. | Board Member – Enabling all investors to have access to great investment products at reasonable fees

  • Ethereum Capital | Board Member – Technology company focused on becoming the central business and investment hub for the Ethereum ecosystem 

  • Q REIT | Board Member – Toronto-based rental apartment investment organization 

  • Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) | Board Member – Drives the development of Ontario’s economy by helping create new jobs, products, services, technologies and businesses 

  • OneEleven | Board Member – A highly curated community of Canada’s leading high-growth technology startups 

  • Council of Canadian Innovators (CCI) | Vice Chair – A non-profit organization dedicated to helping high-growth Canadian technology firms scale up globally 

  • Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) | Member Council – Funds Canadian cleantech projects and coaches the companies that lead them as they move their ground-breaking technologies to market 

John is also the Vice-Chair of the David Suzuki Foundation and is a board member of the Royal Ontario Museum, Caldwell Partners “Top 40 Under 40” and League of Innovators. In addition, John is a Dean’s Advisory Council Member to the Schulich Business School as well a member of the Toronto chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO). 

Prior to joining OMERS, Mr. Ruffolo was a Partner at Deloitte, as well as the Global Thought Leader, the Global Tax Leader and the Canadian Industry Leader for Deloitte’s Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) practice. He was also a member of the firm’s Tax and TMT Global Leadership teams and a member of Deloitte’s Board of Directors. 

A chartered accountant, Mr. Ruffolo was formerly a partner with Arthur Andersen LLP and has also spent time as an instructor for both the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and York University’s Schulich School of Business, from which he holds a Bachelor of Business Administration.
